Play Tricks on Your Eyes: Optical Illusions and More!

Ever seen one of those tricky optical illusions that seem to be one thing but gradually change the more you stare at it? They’re heaps of fun but what exactly are they and how do they work? An optical illusion is usually an image that we perceive as something else. In other words, the image is not what it seems to be. Optical illusions play tricks on our eyes and brains in a very simple way.

When the eyes normally see something, they send the information to our brains to be processed. For example, if we see a dog, that image is sent to the brain. The brain then matches it with our concept of a dog, so that we understand what the animal is. However, optical illusions use color, position, movement and other graphical techniques in ways that are not typically used. This tricks our brains so that it thinks it is seeing one image when it actually knows that image doesn't logically make sense. For a long time, people have enjoyed optical illusions since they can be very entertaining and they make us wonder what the real image is. Sometimes graphic designers incorporate optical illusions into their work to make it more interesting too. Have a look at some of crazy optical illusions below to learn more and see if you can make sense of them!
