Ray-Ban Eyeglasses - Ray-Ban is an American icon. The sunglass brand was created in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb, after Army Lieutenant John Macready complained that his eyes had been damaged by the sun during a balloon test flight, and asked the company to create sunglasses that would protect his eyes while appearing sophisticated. The new sunglasses were named the Aviator, and made of gold-plated metal and green mineral glass lenses to filter out UV and infrared radiation. They were patented by Bausch & Lomb on May 7, 1937.
U.S. Army Air Corps pilots immediately took to the new sunglasses, and when General Douglas MacArthur was photographed wearing a pair on Normandy Beach near the end of WWII, Ray-Bans spread like wildfire outside the armed forces as well, even to Hollywood. In 1952 Ray-Ban's next style, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, featured plastic frames and also was an instant hit. Wayfarers were sported by television stars, movie stars and rock musicians.
