Tough Reading? Factors That Can Affect Your Vision

Vision problems affect more people than one may think. If a person suspects that he or she is currently experiencing vision problems, then he or she should make an appointment to see an eye doctor as soon as possible. Many people wear eyeglasses, and a good number of people also wear contact lenses. If one is experiencing vision problems, it is imperative that they do not postpone a visit to the eye doctor. Eyeglasses come in many stylish options, and for people who want more discreet options, they can always choose contact lenses.

Your genes

While it may sound like tough luck, the reality is that a good number of people simply were born with genes that have caused them to also develop poor eyesight. One of the reasons that genes can play such a big role in causing bad eyesight is because vision problems can be passed on through genes. If a parent wears glasses or contact lenses, there is a good chance that their child will also develop similar vision problems and have to wear glasses. Thus, it is not completely correct to misleadingly attribute vision problems on the usual culprits like sitting too close to the TV or reading by holding the book up too closely to the eyes.

Your overall health

Another significant and vital factor in determining whether one eventually develops vision problems or not is the overall quality of their health in general. Since the health of one’s eyes is affected by overall health in general, it stands to reason that one can play an important role in shielding the health of their eyes by simply taking care of their overall health. Some simple and understandable measures one can take to help the health of their eyes are precautions like eating the right kinds of foods, or even drinking the right kinds of drinks. For example, carrot juice has long been lauded as having benefits for keeping eyesight sharp, and this is one way where drinking the right nutrients can aid the health of one’s eyes. Green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, garlic, and flax seeds are all foods that help maintain healthy eyes. Eye problems connected to diseases such as diabetes are one of the biggest reasons that people with vision problems see their eye doctor. Therefore, taking precautions against diabetes, by keeping weight down and eating healthy, is a way that people can cut down their risk for getting diabetes.

Age

Yet another factor that can have a meaningful impact on a person developing poor eyesight is the age of the individual. This makes perfect sense when one considers that as the body ages, many different problems can occur as a result of the deterioration in the body. Just having had good vision (as in 20/20 vision) earlier in life or even as early as in childhood does not guarantee that one will not get bad eyesight as they age. Aging individuals are also faced with eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts that tend to be more prevalent in the later stages of life.

Direct damage

Direct damage is perhaps the most clear-cut and easily understandable factor that can meaningfully contribute to damaged or poor vision. One of the most common ways that problems relating to poor eyesight from direct damage are uncovered is via a basic eye exam. An example of an incident that can lead to bad eyesight or vision problems is a work-related accident such as a chemical burn or some type of corneal abrasion. In a work-related accident, something sharp can get into the eye causing lacerations. Vision damage may also come by way of other routes, such as looking at the sun too long or directly, or looking at a computer screen much too long.

There are a number of factors that can affect one’s vision, and primary among these are the four factors of genes, overall health, age and even direct damage. The main thing that a person with bad eyesight has to remember is to make an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible. It is advised that one be proactive in the management of the health of one’s eyes.
